Summary

A New York Times Bestseller
With a new introduction by The Motorcyle Diaries filmmaker Walter Salles, and featuring 24 pages of photos taken by Che。

A journey, a number of journeys。 Ernesto Guevara in search of adventure, Ernesto Guevara in search of America, Ernesto Guevara in search of Che。 On this journey, solitude found solidarity。 'I' turned into 'we'。 --Eduardo Galeano

As his journey progresses, Guevara's voice seems to deepen, to darken, colored by what he witnesses in his travels。 He is still poetic, but now he comments on what he sees, though still poetically, with a new awareness of the social and political ramifications of what's going on around him。 --January Magazine

Our film is about a young man, Che, falling in love with a continent and finding his place in it。 --Walter Salles, director of the film version of The Motorcycle Diaries

All this wandering around Our America with a Capital A has changed me more than I thought。 --Ernesto Che Guevara, from The Motorcycle Diaries
The Motorcycle Diaries is Che Guevara's diary of his journey to discover the continent of Latin America while still a medical student, setting out in 1952 on a vintage Norton motorcycle together with his friend Alberto Granado, a biochemist。 It captures, arguably as much as any book ever written, the exuberance and joy of one person's youthful belief in the possibilities of humankind tending towards justice, peace and happiness。 After the release in 2004 of the exhilarating film of the same title, directed by Walter Salles, the book became a New York Times and international bestseller。
This edition includes a new introduction by Walter Salles and an array of new material that was assembled for the 2004 edition coinciding with the release of the film, including 24 pages of previously unpublished photos taken by Che, notes and comments by his wife, Aleida Guevara March, and an extensive introduction by the distinguished Cuban author, Cintio Vitier。

unusually I had seen the film first! Interesting insight into the young Che and South America in the early 50s

Colourfully written but in the end just another travel journal。 It's the fact that it was written by Che Guevara that has made this into such a best-seller。 We want to see the real man behind the myth。 As far as I can judge, he comes across as a likeable guy。 I also expected to find more strident anti-capitalist rhetoric in these notes。 Other than a few swipes here and there, it's pretty tame。 Colourfully written but in the end just another travel journal。 It's the fact that it was written by Che Guevara that has made this into such a best-seller。 We want to see the real man behind the myth。 As far as I can judge, he comes across as a likeable guy。 I also expected to find more strident anti-capitalist rhetoric in these notes。 Other than a few swipes here and there, it's pretty tame。 。。。more

Powerful book and a truly Inspirational adventure in the 1950s which took some balls …。Want to try this route myself, maybe with a few more pesos and a better bike though …。

Really a lack of detail in some of the more interesting places such as Colombia and Venezuela。 The bulk of the book is about Argentina and Chile, then Peru。 I was also shocked by the casual racism throughout, belittling indigenous people constantly but also some explicit remarks which are unacceptable。 Of course I am judging a 1950s mindset through a 2020s lens, but still some elements shocked me。

I really Interesting background history of Young Che Guevara's life。Well written journal and gives a view of Latin America rarely seen by Americans, yet also shows we are all the same。 I found the foreward to be too long and mostly unnecessary。 The trip took place in 1952, when Che Guevara was still a medical student, a part of his life rarely analyzed。 I really Interesting background history of Young Che Guevara's life。Well written journal and gives a view of Latin America rarely seen by Americans, yet also shows we are all the same。 I found the foreward to be too long and mostly unnecessary。 The trip took place in 1952, when Che Guevara was still a medical student, a part of his life rarely analyzed。 。。。more

I was telling you that to be a revolutionary requires having a revolution。 We already have it。 And a revolutionary must also know the people with whom he or she is to work。“The best form of saying is doing。” And let us then march toward the future of Cuba。Ernesto Che Guevara

Alberto and Ernesto , What an adventure they went on, even with out Ernesto becoming Che Guevara, it's a very bold travel log , literally they begged and tricked for food and lodging, I feel people now are not brave enough to endure such a massive adventure , leave alone doctors , they slept in barns , on river beds, a lot of police stations and check posts , they starved like hell , O God these men are true nomads。This book is like a prequel for comming of Guevara , we can sense , his anger ,hi Alberto and Ernesto , What an adventure they went on, even with out Ernesto becoming Che Guevara, it's a very bold travel log , literally they begged and tricked for food and lodging, I feel people now are not brave enough to endure such a massive adventure , leave alone doctors , they slept in barns , on river beds, a lot of police stations and check posts , they starved like hell , O God these men are true nomads。This book is like a prequel for comming of Guevara , we can sense , his anger ,his frustration upon poverty and class standards in Latin America and its only 6 years away。Being India from Asia, it's a hard read ,like he is from a different world of time and place , to get a grasp , we need a map of Latin America and their political and social history, I feel most of it is the translators fault , they should have been more leasure。 It's really a hard read , even in this harness we can see Che growing up, we can see how normadic these medicos are 。I must read it again, this time with a Latin map and brief history of South America。 。。。more

A very interesting memoir of Che Guevara。 Guevara is shown as a passionate soul and his writing is very well done。 Che´s trips are interesting and show what the world is like。 Che and Alberto are an interesting pair and their friendship is clear。 Its interesting seeing Che´s development over the book as his passion becomes clear。 Overall this is an interesting book that I recommend。

- This may not be a book from a good narrator, but it has perfectly depicted what Che wanted to say。- The Journey with Alberto was mainly focused on the People and culture of Latin American countries。- Being a white person, doctor, and with lack of money to travel helped him to understand the poorest and marginalized people among the proletariat。- The racist remark in the end regarding black people is dreadful。

I've always been interested in those lists titled "20 books to read as a 20 year-old", "25 books to read as a 25 year-old", and so on。 23 is a stereotypically bullshit age, which everyone seems to hold in disdain, and I do not believe there are very many well-curated "23 books to read as a 23 year-old" lists。 THAT BEING SAID, I am so happy I read The Motorcycle Diaries at the age of 23, written by San Ernesto also at age 23/24。 It gave me reassurance that, although I have a long way to go, every I've always been interested in those lists titled "20 books to read as a 20 year-old", "25 books to read as a 25 year-old", and so on。 23 is a stereotypically bullshit age, which everyone seems to hold in disdain, and I do not believe there are very many well-curated "23 books to read as a 23 year-old" lists。 THAT BEING SAID, I am so happy I read The Motorcycle Diaries at the age of 23, written by San Ernesto also at age 23/24。 It gave me reassurance that, although I have a long way to go, everything I experience now will eventually come to some use in the future (my ideologies, perspectives, sentiments)。 We see the beginnings of Che's introspections, desires to change a system designed to keep the poor in states of poverty through ill health, hunger, etc。 I did not expect the writing to be as high level as it was (don't ask me why), and I certainly did not expect there to be so much description of the Latin American paisaje, which I usually dislike and skip when I read, but being able to see 1950s Latin America, the cities and the rural land, through the eyes of Che, eventually became what I looked forward to the most when I picked up the book everyday。By the end of the last chapter, we understand that this is only the beginning for Che。 Even if we came to know nothing of what happened to him, we would innately know that he did not return to the middle-class life waiting for him in Argentina。 This was his first travel through Latin America and it sparked something that could only be satiated by "doing not saying"。 I thought that including his speech to the Cuban medical students was very apt, as being a doctor and seeing first hand the disease the poor had to face at the hands of poverty (something we see second hand in the Motorcycle Diaries and is arguably his introduction into becoming a revolutionary) , would have influenced the political structure of Cuba post-revolution whose main priorities include free education and healthcare for all。 。。。more

The diaries of a young Ernesto Guevara as he travels through South America。My favourite quote (on the second last page) is, “I see it printed in the night sky that I, eclectic dissembler of doctrine and psychoanalyst of dogma, howling like one possessed, will assault the barricades or the trenches, will take my bloodstained weapon and, consumed with fury, slaughter any enemy who falls into my hands。”

A superb journal /by a man of the people /of a sublime trip。

。。。more
